오광수(1937~)는 1963년 동아일보 신춘문예 제1회 미술평론 부문 당선을 통해 등단한 이후, 1세대 전업미술비평가로 전방위 활동을 펼쳐왔다. 특히 현장을 누비며 작가들과 직접 교류하고 소통하면서 생산해낸 그의 글들은 한국현대미술사의 빈칸을 채우는 데 실증적 연구로서 가치를 지닌다. 일반적으로 오광수를 앵포르멜에서 단색화에 이르는 한국 모더니즘 미술 비평가로 규정해 온 데 비해, 본 논문에서는 그의 초기 평론에서부터 지속적으로 제기된 동양화와 한국화에 관한 문제의식에 주목한다. 논의는 미술평론가 오광수의 활동 가운데서도 특히 그의 신춘문예 당선작 「전통 계승의 자세: 동양화의 내일을 위하여」를 출발점으로 삼아 오광수가 전통을 고정된 형식이나 개념이 아닌, 현대의 시점에서 재구성되어야 할 비평적 과제로 인식했다고 보고, 이후 지속된 그의 한국화 비평 및 전시기획이 1980년대 수묵화 운동에 미친 영향 등에 초점을 맞춰 살펴본다. 이를 통해 오광수의 한국화 비평이 1980–90년대 한국화 분야와 신세대 작가들에게 수묵이라는 매체가 지닌 조형적·정신적 가능성을 탐구하는 데 기여하고, 이를 분석하는 비평적 관점을 제시했음을 밝히고자 한다.

Since his debut in 1963 as the first winner of the Dong-A Ilbo annual spring literary contest in the art criticism category, Oh Kwang-su (1937–) has been a prolific first-generation professional art critic. His writings, produced through direct interaction and sustained communication with artists in the field, hold significant value as empirical research that fills the gaps in the history of Korean contemporary art. While Oh has generally been defined as a critic of Korean modernist art—spanning from Informel to Dansaekhwa—this paper focuses on the critical consciousness regarding Oriental and Korean painting that has consistently appeared in his work since his early years. Starting with his debut essay, "The Attitude Toward Inheriting Tradition: For the Future of Oriental Painting," this discussion posits that Oh perceived tradition not as a fixed form or concept, but as a critical task to be reconstructed from a contemporary perspective. The study further examines how his subsequent criticism and exhibition curation influenced the Ink Wash Painting Movement of the 1980s. Through this analysis, the paper aims to demonstrate that Oh Kwang-su’s criticism contributed to exploring the formative and spiritual possibilities of ink as a medium for new-generation artists in the 1980s and 1990s, while providing a critical framework for analyzing these developments.
